Cell membrane thin membrane that surrounds every living cell. The cell membrane gives the cell its structure and regulates the materials that enter and leave the cell. The cell membrane is a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment which protects the cell from its environment. Cell membrane is a protective covering that acts as a barrier between the inner and outer environment of a cell in animals. Its function is to protect the integrity of the interior of the cell by allowing certain substances into the cell while keeping other substances out. One of the things that all cells have in common is a cell membrane. The cell membrane is the outermost limit of the cell but it is more than a simple envelope surrounding the cellular contents. The membrane also contains membrane proteins including integral proteins that go across the membrane serving as membrane transporters and peripheral proteins that loosely. Their main job is to control the movement of things. It is an actively functioning part of the living material and many important metabolic reactions actually take place on its surface.
